Where We Are
At the beginning of the second millenium the area was the cradle of one of the most famous Benedictine Monasteries, the Badia della SS. Trinità, an abbey founded by Saint Alferio. Its excellent position and its orografical configuration have ensured that the town of Cava de’ Tirreni, once known as The City of the Cave, probably due to the fact that it was situated in a cave overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, has always prospered. Over the course of centuries it became a flourishing market town, as evidenced by its continuing modern day commercial activities. It is the only example in Southern Italy of a town with stone arcades the socalled “Portici”. It is also known as “Little Switzerland” thanks to its surrounding green and rolling hills and as the “Bologna of the South” due to its characteristic arcades, typical of the historical town in Emilia-Romagna.
